Percy Jackson & the Olympians 3, the news waiting for the film
Cinema / Focus - 19 September 2019
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson is the musical on stage.
The film Percy Jackson 3 is still in the pre-production stage.
20th Century Fox could decide to produce the film sequel based on the success of the musical, which has been on the scene since 2017. After the summer break, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical will resume September 2019 on Broadway (Longacre Theater). Chris McCarrell plays Percy Jackson, a young man who discovers he is the son of the gods and suddenly has powers he can't control. The direction is by Stephen Brackett with choreography by Patrick McCollum. Based on the play’s reception, the production company could decide to shoot the film that would have otherwise remain stranded.

The same author of the book from which the saga was taken, Rick Riordan, has responded to requests for information from fans by recapping the status. He reiterated that the rights to the film are in the hands of Fox, while those of the musical are not.
One of the problems of the sequel would be age of the actors. In 2010, the first film’s release - Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief which grossed 224.6 million dollars – they were teenagers, so there is the question of believability that they can currently pass in those roles.
The protagonist Logan Lerman - who was then 17 years old, and now 27 - is however obliged by contract to work in three films, so it is likely that if Fox should opt for the third film, it will be necessary to see an older version of Percy.
When 20th Century Fox started making character-based films, they hypothesized to emulate the clamor of Harry Potter, but six years had passed since the second film - Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in 2013 which grossed200.9 million - and now the wait may have been too extensive, also sanctioning fan’s disinterest. Alexandra Daddario, who played Annabeth, does not seem very believable for that sequel role.
The first films were based on the series’ first two books written by Riordan: they are not available on Netflix, only available on Google Play, YouTube and Amazon Video.
The musical has so far satisfied the tastes of fans, so much so that they have received 3 Drama Desk Award nominations. "The winning adaptation" The Hollywood Reporter called it. Here also, Percy is son of Poseidon and discovers that he has powers he cannot control, has monsters on his trail and goes in search of Zeus's lightning to prevent a war between the Greek gods.
The original recording of the musical was released by Broadway Records, winning the best new off-Broadway album at the Broadway World Albums in 2018.
While interviewed on the new novel The Burning Maze (which is part of The Trials of Apollo, after The Hidden Oracle and The Dark Prophecy), Riordan said the grim themes of the new work - where death plays a key role - are essential. "Death is part of life, and without any good boy who dies, there are no real interests in the narrative".
Here, the gods are seen through the eyes of Apollo instead of those of Percy: "This is what I love most in writing such series, coming to the same characters from slightly different angles,” he said, “we know how Percy sees Annabeth, but how would Apollo see her? Or do we know that Annabeth sees Percy the way Piper would see him?"
