G.B. Joyce is the author of The Code and The Black Ace, the first two instalments of the Brad Shade mystery series. The books have been adapted  for a television series premiering May 2016 on Global TV and starring Jason Priestley.

'The Code' inspired the five-season renewed TV series 'Private Eyes'. When did you decide to write this novel?

Honestly it’s the first time I ever tried writing novel-length fiction. I had published my first short story a few months before—ESPN The Magazine had published an all fiction issue edited by Dave Eggers, an award-winning writer of both novels and journalism. He brought in a bunch of famous writers — I covered hockey for the magazine and my bosses told me I could take a shot at writing a short story for the issue. It was crazy but I was the only sportswriter who made it into the issue, a story based on a NBA player who went missing in Africa during the 70s. It was the most exciting thing to ever happen in my professional life—my first fiction appeared in a magazine with a subscription of two million readers. Writing a novel was the next thing. I climbed a hill and then looked for a mountain. A television series ... I wouldn’t allow myself to dream that.
