Tv series 'Private Eyes', interview with author Gare Joyce: 'Write what you know'

The old saying: Write what you know. I’ve covered hockey as a reporter for 30 years. Players I met when they were 16 now manage professional teams. I know the lives of players and former players. A lot of them thing that Shade is based on them. I’ll keep them guessing. Truth is, when my friends read the book they told me that they hear my voice when Shade talks. My favourite mystery writer Ross Macdonald once said of his great character Archer, “I’m not him but he’s me.” I think that’s true with Shade. I try to balance humour and mystery. If it falls a little heavier on one side, I’d say humour.
