When did you decide to become a writer?
I wrote my first “book” when I was 11. It was a kid’s biography of Jack Johnson, the heavyweight champion back in the early 1900s. When I was 11 I knew I was going to write one way or another. I loved journalism so early in my life—when I was seven I would come home from school and lay the newspaper on the floor and crawl over it to read it—the pages were just too big to hold. I also loved literature but I don’t know that journalism can make you a novelist. I think the journalists who have written great novels would have become novelists even without working at newspapers or magazines.
